Your home, your choice: advocates take aim at gas ban

A pro-gas campaign is taking aim at Victoria's ban on the non-renewable energy source in new homes.

Advocates say the Your Home, Your Choice campaign will empower consumers to make their own decisions about the governments "forced transition away from gas".

Campaigners will also release a fact sheet, which they say will address government misinformation.

The ban took effect from January 2024 as part of the government's plan to reach net-zero emissions in the state by 2045.

Earlier this month, Premier Jacinta Allan said the move would affect gas connections to new homes and government buildings.

She said the ban didn't apply to existing gas cooktops but wouldn't be drawn on whether households needing to replace gas hot water systems or heaters would eventually be forced to go electric.

At the time, the premier said gas was a diminishing resource and households would be encouraged to replace existing appliances with electric.

On Monday, Master Plumbers chief executive Peter Daly said Victorians whose homes were connected to gas mains deserved the right to make informed decisions.

He said the fact sheet, released by Master Plumbers, highlights six important questions to ask before switching to electric.

"The Victorian government says all households will save on energy bills by going all-electric but in reality, no two homes are the same," Mr Daly said.

"While electric appliances may suit some, others may prefer to continue to use gas, especially when many people are very concerned about putting all their energy eggs in the one basket."

He said Master Plumbers believes the energy transition is essential but challenging and requires an orderly transition done with genuine consultation.
