A $20,000 emergency fund sounds wonderfully responsible until a little voice asks whether that money should do more. Cash provides a financial shock absorber, but an oversized cushion can also leave money parked in an account when some of it could serve another goal.
The word “enough” creates the real challenge, because no universal emergency-fund number works for every household. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says emergency savings can cover unplanned expenses such as repairs, medical bills, or lost income, and it notes that the amount people need depends on their circumstances.
