Your Dog Knows More of What You’re Saying Than You Think

Dogs
Research suggests dogs can connect familiar words with objects, process words separately from tone and, in rare cases, learn new names simply by listening. Your dog’s everyday vocabulary may be larger than you realize. (Pexels).

Your dog may not understand every detail of your dinner-table conversation, but science increasingly suggests those perked-up ears are processing more than background noise. Researchers studying dog word understanding have found evidence that dogs can distinguish familiar words, connect certain words with objects, and combine verbal information with tone. Some exceptionally talented dogs can even learn new object names simply by overhearing people talking.

That does not mean your Labrador is secretly fluent in English, but it does challenge the idea that dogs respond only to your voice or body language. The more researchers investigate canine cognition, the more sophisticated the dog-human communication system appears.
