Young voters fear mass shootings like the one in Oregon, but that fear divides them on gun control

A gunman shot and killed three children and a teacher at a school in Bend, Oregon, on Oct. 15, 2026, the 52nd school shooting this year, according to CNN. The children’s ages were 5, 8 and 11; a 7-year-old and another teacher were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The 16-year-old shooting suspect was shot and killed by a bystander.

Though Oregon has stricter gun laws than most states, some of those laws, such as a measure requiring tougher background checks and requiring a person to have a permit in order to buy a gun, are stalled in court.
