Young girl seriously injured after being struck by van in Co Waterford as gardai close road

A young girl has been seriously injured after being struck by a van in Co Waterford.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident in Ballymacarbry at around 4.30pm on Thursday afternoon.

The young pedestrian was taken to CHI at Temple Street in Dublin where she is being treated for serious injuries.

The driver of the van was unharmed in the collision.

The road will remain closed overnight so that a forensic collision examination can be done in the morning, and local diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them, particularly if you were travelling on the R671 between 4.25 pm and 4.40 pm and have camera footage of any kind that can be made available to gardai.

A garda spokesperson: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a road traffic collision on the R671 at Ballymacarbry, Co Waterford this afternoon, 7th April 2022.

“The collision occurred at approximately 4.30pm and involved a van and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a female (youth) was later taken to CHI at Temple Street in Dublin where she is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries.

“The driver of the van was unharmed.

“The road will remain closed overnight. A forensic collision examination is due to take place tomorrow morning. Local diversions are currently in place.”
