Young German man rescued after falling from hill on camping holiday in Highlands

A young man from Germany who was on a camping holiday in Scotland with a group of school pals has been rescued after falling from a hill in the Highlands.

The incident took place around 10pm yesterday when one of the men slipped on the rocks just north of Achmelvich beach, near Lochinver, and injured his ankle.

Unable to walk, his friends managed to help him back to their campsite and called the Scottish Ambulance Service for assistance.

Upon arrival, the paramedic decided it would be easier to carry the man down to the beach rather than over land up to the road. To do this, they contacted Lochinver RNLI lifeboat who also sped to the scene to assist.

After being ferried over to the beach, crew members raced up the hill with a stretcher in a bid to reach the victim and bring him to safety, along with three more paramedics who also joined the rescue efforts.

Together, they helped the youngster into the stretcher and carried him down the hill to the beach where he was rushed by lifeboat to a waiting ambulance shortly before midnight.

It is unclear whether the man was taken to hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.

A spokesperson for Lochinver RNLI lifeboat said: "Whilst the RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea, as we did tonight, occasionally we are required to venture on land as well."

Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
