You’ve been sleeping on the latest beauty trend: astrology

Just as fashion trends change every season, the hot topics in the beauty sphere are constantly evolving. Though some come and go (strawberry girl makeup and grunge glam, we’re looking as you), others stick around – just look at our ongoing obsession with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Right now, astrology is trending. But does it have legs?

According to a report by Allied Market Research, the astrology market is expected to rise to $22.8 billion by 2031, while the term ‘astrology’ accounts for 4 million posts on TikTok. Though this doesn’t all relate to beauty, it’s clearly a huge area of interest – and some brands have started to offer products which are personalised to each individual zodiac sign.

“An astrological approach offers a unique advantage by providing a personalised and holistic framework for skincare,” says Andrea Pfeffer, the skincare expert who founded Salon C. Stellar, a beauty salon which offers ‘Astro Facials’. “By considering an individual's zodiac sign, we can tailor treatments and product formulations to address specific skin concerns and emotional needs. This level of customisation enhances the customer experience, fostering a deeper connection between the individual and the brand.”

It seems that understanding your personality traits from your birth chart can help you choose what’s right for your skin. “Fire signs might benefit from invigorating treatments, while Earth signs could gravitate towards grounding and nurturing experiences,” continues Pfeffer. “For example, Virgos, known for their analytical nature, often experience skin imbalances due to stress and anxiety.”

Other brands, though, have a more playful approach. For Rebecca Matthews and Ian Welsh, co-founders of Horosoaps, it’s a little more tongue in cheek: “Horosoaps has a slight irreverence towards beauty paired with a lightheartedness and levity of British humour,” says Matthews. “Some of our soaps include Wash Away Your Sins Scorpio, which is enriched with charcoal to absorb your toxic mess or Toughen-Up Cancer, which is infused with anxiety-reducing jasmine and ylang-ylang.”

Scroll on for our list of the best beauty products for your star sign.

Fire signs

Signs Aries (March 21 - April 19), Leo (July 23 to August 22), and Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21)

Those fuelled by the fire element tend to be charismatic, life-of-the-party individuals who are always on the go. Aries are known for their confidence while Leos are proud with a side of main character energy and Sagis are characterised by their free-spirited nature.

With that in mind, they should lean into invigorating formulas which satisfy their desire for adventure – think peppermint and vitamin C. As natural travellers, they should keep their routines simple and easy to follow as well as invest in travel-friendly products which you can use on the move. And they can usually benefit from depuffing and complexion-evening blends which help after a late night out – regardless of what country they’re in.

Generally, they like to passionately lead the way so you can expect them to be a little vocal when it comes to their favourites. But, a word of warning, they don’t tend to be as analytical as their Earth or Air contemporaries – but their instinct is usually spot on.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Hyaluronic Acid Serum

La Roche-Posay is stripping back skincare so that even those with the most sensitive skin can make the most of its nourishing products. This serum is the product equivalent of a tall glass of water that brings instant freshness to your complexion. The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG 30ml

There is a reason why this is one of The Ordinary’s bestselling products. You may think that caffeine only serves a purpose in your morning brew but it actually packs a very impressive punch in skincare too. With scientific backing, it has been proven to reduce the look of puffiness and the dreaded dark circles. This product contains a high concentration of the good stuff and only requires a pea-sized amount that you can apply day or night. It has a cooling effect when applied and the price is also not to be sniffed at.

Kate Somerville +Retinol Firming Eye Cream

The price of this retinol eye cream might make your eyes water but on the plus side, the formula won’t. This cream doesn’t simply rely on retinol, but the plant-powered efficacy of bioretinols, which mimic retinol’s effects while reducing sensitivity. The formulation’s honey-like hue (picture Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream) sinks straight in, partly thanks to the ingenious applicator, which aids absorption without unnecessary pressure.

Earth signs

Signs Taurus (April 20–May 20), Virgo (August 23–September 22) and Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

As you might guess from the name, Earth signs have more grounded characteristics. They’re loyal, intelligent and stay true to their mind – and, bring some much-needed stability to the other signs. So, rather than following trends, they stick to products they know work, meaning science-backed brands and ingredients are at the front of the queue.

Beyond that, they prefer products which make sense, whether it’s an SPF to stop sun damage or a people-pleasing fragrance. They love sticking to a disciplined plan, making them great at skincare, but their occasional stubbornness means they rarely introduce new products which could have a positive impact (classic Taurus).

Ambitious Capricorns should be looking for hardworking products which deliver a strong blend of actives while caring Virgos should opt for nourishing ingredients like plant-based oils. Tauruses, on the other hand, might benefit from the luxurious brands as they love a bit of elevated comfort.

Murad Multi-Vitamin Clear Coat SPF 50

According to research compiled by Murad, as many as 50 per cent of consumers dislike the marks that sunscreens can leave on skin. This has encouraged the label to create an SPF that feels near invisible on application - and can’t be seen either.

The Multi-Vitamin Clear Coat has a high SPF50 but is transparent on the complexion, giving you the benefits of a chemical suncream but throwing vitamins C, D, E and F into the mix too.

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser

A balm-to-oil cleanser that’s a deservedly cult product. Effective, great for daily use, and leaves skin feeling moisturised.

Worn by: Niall Horan and Jodie Comer

Instantly recognisable, it comes as no surprise that Le Labo’s Santal 33 is a hit among the celebrity set, namely One Direction and Killing Eve alum. The heady scent is addictive, and one whiff is never enough as notes of cardamom, iris, violet and ambrox evolve into the sensual leather and musk aroma that leaves an elegant scent trail that lasts all day.

Dermatica Nourishing Ceramide + Peptide Moisturiser

You may have heard the term peptides being discussed among the beauty community and the ingredient is one of the latest buzzwords with the tag #peptidemoisturizer reaching over 4.9 million views on TikTok.

But it’s not just our friends across the pond that are getting in on the skin barrier-protecting ingredient. Dermatica is making it more accessible than ever (products with this component tend to be quite pricey) with this formula that was created in order to support the external layer, while also reducing wrinkles, calming inflammation and counteracting dryness. Providing quick relief, the star ingredient is set alongside ceramides to double down on helping the skin barrier, and niacinamide to tackle the appearance of dark spots.

Air signs

Signs Gemini (May 21–June 21), Libra (September 23–October 23) and Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

The communicators of the Zodiacs, Air signs tend to be the most social people you know. From a people-pleasing Libra to a Gemini gifted with the ability to speak to just about anyone (having two personalities helps, after all), their social life means their calendar is usually fully booked.

With that in mind, their beauty products should be those that refresh and hydrate among all the plans. That could be a gentle acid-infused exfoliating cleanser followed by a plant-based facial oil and a nourishing, plumping moisturiser – and eye patches are essential. And, since they’re always going from A to B, a daily SPF is a must.

Their curiosity means they’re happy to try anything new – so you can expect them to have tested most retinol and wonder ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide – but their desire to understand means they quickly work out the best ingredients. The only downside is that they can be impulsive so sometimes try things out of the blue – so we’d advise avoiding any last-minute beauty procedures.

Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream

With immediate glow and plumping benefits, it is no wonder that Tatcha’s The Dewy Skin Cream has become a cult buy. The Japanese label has infused its day cream with botanical extracts and its signature Okinawa algae ingredient which is renowned for its intense hydration.

There is also Japanese purple rice, an antioxidant to support the skin against external aggressors. The rich purple-hued cream is thick so a little goes a long way yet is soothing and non-comedogenic.

Haekels Seaweed Solar Protect SPF 50+

Texturally very pleasing, the Seaweed Solar Protect SPF 50+ is serum-oil hybrid that cossets skin and makes it feel properly soft. The Evening Standard’s fashion director Victoria Moss is a convert for its ability to protect and moisturise without irritating skin. But there’s an additional charm: the primary ingredient is seaweed found on the Kent coastline, with Haeckels being B Corp Certified for their efforts to preserve the environment while making excellent products.

There are many gems in the Medik8 collection that extend beyond the brand’s beloved retinol range. The Micellar Mousse is one such product, empowering bubbles to remove makeup while clarifying the complexion. The formula contains unique technology - spheres or micelles as they are known that are infused with olive oil to melt impurities, SPF or foundation and the like. There is also antioxidant-rich moringa oil to protect the skin and glycerin to up the hydration levels.

Water signs

Signs Cancer (June 21–July 22), Scorpio (October 23–November 21) and Pisces (February 19–March 20)

The most sensitive of the Zodiacs, water signs are all about emotion — and they feel deeply. When they’re happy, they’re ecstatic. When they’re sad, they’re despondent. With that in mind, they can benefit from beauty products with balancing and soothing credentials. From a rich, creamy moisturiser to a niacinamide serum, they lean towards ingredients which deliver gentle nourishment and complexion-enhancing goodness.

They also have the ability to connect with others on a much deeper level, meaning they take on everyone else’s emotions too – especially Cancers. So, they could always do with a pampering self-care moment to help them deal with the sometimes overwhelming burden, meaning masks, bubble baths and candles should be at the top of the list.

Scorpios are the most passionate of the three, so a touch of calming chamomile wouldn’t go amiss. For Pisces, though, it’s best to go for glow-giving oils and serums which radiate their inner warmth and compassion to their complexion.

Susanne Kaufmann Mallow Bubble Bath
