You Can Play Tetris In Six Volkswagen Cars, But You Will Pay

  • AirConsole appears on six 2027 Volkswagen models: Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan, Golf GTI, Golf R, and ID.Buzz.
  • The launch catalog includes PAC-MAN Championship Edition and Tetris.
  • After the trial, continued access requires the In-Vehicle Premium subscription at $149 a year.

Volkswagen of America has turned six of its 2027 models into game consoles, and Rachael Zaluzec, the brand's chief marketing officer, is not shy about the ambition behind it. She says the company wants "experiences that bring people together and make every interaction with our brand more meaningful."

The feature is called AirConsole, and it lands on the Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan, Golf GTI, Golf R and ID.Buzz. It launches with 20 games, including PAC-MAN Championship Edition and Tetris, and it comes with a subscription catch once the trial period runs out.

Volkswagen AirConsole Arrives On Six 2027 Models

Volkswagen built AirConsole around N-Dream's existing gaming platform, and the automaker calls itself the first volume brand in the US to offer the AirConsole in-vehicle gaming platform on a factory infotainment screen. The 2027 Volkswagen model lineup gets the feature spread across three very different vehicles, from the three-row Atlas to the electric ID.Buzz.

The 20-game launch catalog features recognizable names such as PAC-MAN Championship Edition, UNO Car Party! and Tetris headlining the list. Volkswagen also baked in some house branding, with a custom PAC-MAN skin and other titles carrying Volkswagen-specific content built for the launch.

Select vehicles pair the games with ambient lighting, syncing the cabin's mood lighting to on-screen action. That kind of hardware integration ties directly into how Volkswagen has been rethinking its cabin controls and touchscreen layout across the range.

Anthony Cliquot, CEO of N-Dream, framed the launch around scale rather than novelty. He said AirConsole "will not only entertain millions of people, but also make the in-vehicle experience richer," as Volkswagen rolls it out across North America.

AirConsole Uses Smartphones As Controllers While Parked

There is no separate gamepad to buy or store in the glovebox. Passengers scan a QR code that appears on the vehicle's infotainment display, and their own smartphone becomes the controller for whatever game is running on the big screen.

That setup only works with the car stationary. AirConsole requires the vehicle to be parked, plus a compatible infotainment system, active vehicle connectivity and a phone that meets the platform's requirements, all tied to Volkswagen's broader connected-vehicle software rollout.

Access requires the In-Vehicle Premium package through the myVW app, and the free trial varies by model. The Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan and Golf twins get three months included at no cost, while the ID.Buzz comes with a full year built in.

Once that window closes, buyers need a paid In-Vehicle Premium subscription to keep AirConsole and the rest of the connected features running. Volkswagen has not published a confirmed US price for that plan yet, so the long-term cost for owners who want to keep playing past the trial remains an open question.

Motor1's Take: In-car games like AirConsole are a fun way to pass time while parked, especially if you are waiting at a charger or stuck in a school pickup line. Locking Tetris and the rest of the catalog behind a wider connected-services bundle, though, means many owners may sample the trial and then let the feature lapse once the subscription cost kicks in.
