‘You and I had ‘gang stuff’ for over 15 years’: Epstein letter shows how he tried to leverage powerful friends like Wexner and Gates

The Justice Department just released millions of pages of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Amongst them are letters that offer a glimpse into how Epstein tried to leverage his many powerful, wealthy contacts. One such letter was a draft Epstein wrote to Leslie Wexner, the billionaire retail tycoon who was once his main financial backer.

The undated letter, addressed to “Les,” came after their acrimonious split. However, Epstein was clearly trying to remind Wexner of their past, writing, “You and I had ‘gang stuff’ for over 15 years,” and, “I owe a great debt to you, as frankly you owe to me.” Epstein was careful to add that he had “no intention of divulging any confidence of ours,” which sounds less like a reassurance and more like an implied threat.

According to the New York Times, this missive fits a disturbing pattern where Epstein seemed to toy with the idea of reminding his financial sponsors that he knew their supposed secrets, suggesting he was keeping quiet about them. These messages, often riddled with spelling errors and stray punctuation, shifted wildly between appearing menacing and sounding sentimental.

Wexner wasn’t the only one he targeted

A 2013 email Epstein drafted to himself detailed the “morally inappropriate” work he supposedly did for billionaire Bill Gates. Epstein also repeatedly badgered private equity billionaire Leon Black for millions of dollars. Epstein noted his work structuring payments Black made to a woman who had accused him of sexual assault, while reassuring him, saying, “Of course re any non financial issues, I am always there for you and will continue to be the best friend I can be.”

Representatives for all three men have strongly dismissed Epstein’s insinuations and allegations as completely untrue. To understand the leverage attempt against Wexner, you have understand their relationship. Starting in the late 1980s, Epstein had virtually unfettered authority over Wexner’s massive fortune. Their relationship unraveled in 2007 during Epstein’s initial conviction.

When Wexner’s wife, Abigail, a corporate lawyer, took over management of the family fortune, she discovered that Epstein “had misappropriated a significant amount of the family’s funds.” Several years later, Epstein reached out to Wexner when facing increased litigation from his victims. When his initial attempts to be friendly were rebuffed, he began his attempts at disguised threats, while insisting he “would never put you in harms way.”

As the investigation continues, Wexner’s name remains on the Justice Department’s list of names of interest because of these missives, as well as the confirmation that Epstein was keeping cryptic notes on many of his contacts.
