The Yankees acquired outfielder Alex Verdugo from the Red Sox on Tuesday night in just the eighth trade between the two teams since 1969.
But will this end New York’s pursuit of Padres star outfielder Juan Soto?
It’s no secret that the Padres are trying to shed (some) payroll after a disappointing season that fell well short of expectations in 2023. After unexpectedly missing the playoffs with a loaded and expensive roster, San Diego is making some changes and Soto is the star player that has been most heavily rumored in trade talks this offseason.
The Yankees emerged as one of several suitors for the 25-year-old slugger, who is entering the prime of his career and would bolster the middle of the lineup alongside fellow star Aaron Judge.
But in light of the Verdugo trade, could the Yankees be moving on in their pursuit of Soto? The answer is probably not, but that didn’t mean fans of the Bronx Bombers weren’t panicking about that possibility on social media.
Here are the best reactions from Yankees fans from X in the wake of the Verdugo trade.

We all know Cash is not trading for Soto. His team is profitable and George is not here to say win a ship or your fired. Balance sheet rules Yankees universe.

Baffling move. They help the Sox free up cash while adding a middling defender and sub-par bat. What in the world are they doing?
