Xbox Unveils New Program Called 'Mythic Achievements' That Is Similar to PlayStation Trophies

Xbox is finally adding a completion reward that players have been asking for since the PlayStation Platinum Trophy first launched nearly two decades ago.

Microsoft has unveiled Mythic Achievements, a new milestone system for players who fully complete a game's achievement list, and the rollout has officially arrived for Xbox Insiders.

Xbox Unveils the New 'Mythic Achievements' Feature

Microsoft confirmed through its Xbox News wire that Mythic Achievements are coming to Xbox as part of the platform's October 2026 Insider update. The feature was first teased by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma earlier in the year, and evidence of it had been slowly surfacing through the Xbox Insider program's Alpha Skip-Ahead testing ring for weeks before the official word arrived.

Players in the Alpha Skip-Ahead tier had already spotted a new filter on the achievements page labeled Completed and Incomplete Mythic Achievement, which caused only games with every base achievement unlocked to display.

That behavior mapped directly to how Platinum Trophies work on PlayStation, and the discovery generated significant attention from the achievement hunting community before any formal announcement was made.

Sharma confirmed the feature was being built for a late 2026 release window back in mid-August, and the October Insider rollout follows through on that timeline, with a broader public launch expected to follow the Insider testing phase.

Microsoft's Mythic Achievements Program For Xbox

According to reporting from TrueAchievements, which extracted detailed mechanics around how the feature will function, a Mythic Achievement unlocks automatically once a player completes all base game challenges in a title. The process is designed to be hands-off, triggering on its own without requiring players to navigate to a specific menu or perform a manual action.

The icon itself is a sleek green badge, discovered alongside an unlock sound when a user named Klobrille extracted both from the Xbox PC app ahead of the feature's public confirmation. The visual and audio components appear to be fully designed and production-ready, consistent with the feature being close to a public launch rather than still in early development.

Get Rewarded For Your Achievements in Games

One of the most player-friendly aspects of the Mythic Achievements system is that it is retroactive. Any game a player has already completed with all base achievements unlocked will automatically award the corresponding Mythic Achievement once the feature goes live, meaning long-time completionists will not have to replay anything to receive credit for work they have already done.

However, Mythic Achievements will not add any additional Gamerscore to a player's total. Unlike standard achievements, which each carry a specific point value that contributes to the overall Gamerscore count, the Mythic Achievement functions purely as a cosmetic badge of honor.

It comes with its own unique visual unlock sequence, giving completionists a distinct moment of recognition, but it does not change the numerical Gamerscore associated with any game.

Similar to PlayStation's Trophy System

Microsoft actually invented the modern achievement system when it launched Gamerscore with the Xbox 360 in 2005, well before Sony introduced its trophy framework in 2008. PlayStation's version built on that foundation but added something Xbox never had: the Platinum Trophy, awarded automatically when a player earns every other trophy in a game.

That single addition gave PlayStation's completion system a satisfying endpoint that the Xbox achievement system lacked for nearly two decades.

Mythic Achievements represent Microsoft acknowledging that gap directly. Sharma had signaled for years that the platform was listening to community feedback on the topic, and the Mythic system now gives Xbox completionists the formal milestone that PlayStation players have built entire communities around since the late 2000s.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will DLCs Affect Your Mythic Achievement?

No. According to the reported mechanics surrounding Mythic Achievements, downloadable content and title updates do not factor into whether a player earns the Mythic milestone for a given game. Only base game achievements need to be completed.

This is a notable design decision, since DLC can sometimes inflate a game's total achievement or trophy count significantly, and requiring it would mean Mythic Achievements become moving targets as new content is added post-launch. By anchoring the Mythic to the base game only, Microsoft keeps the completion bar fixed and predictable for every title.

What Is the PlayStation Trophies?

PlayStation's trophy system was introduced by Sony in 2008 as an optional feature across PlayStation 3 games, before becoming mandatory for all PlayStation 3 titles released after January 2009. The system assigns individual trophies across four tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

Bronze trophies reward smaller in-game tasks, Silver and Gold cover more substantial milestones, and the Platinum is awarded automatically when a player collects every other trophy in a base game. Sony later expanded the system to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and introduced a universal trophy level that aggregates earned trophies into a numbered rank displayed on a player's profile.

The Platinum Trophy has become one of the most recognized markers of game completion in console gaming, with dedicated communities built around tracking, celebrating, and comparing Platinum counts across players worldwide.

How to Join the Mythic Program?

The initial rollout of Mythic Achievements is arriving first through the Xbox Insider program, specifically in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead testing rings, which represent the most cutting-edge builds Microsoft distributes before wider releases. Players interested in accessing the feature early can apply to join the Xbox Insider program through the Xbox Insider Hub app available on Xbox consoles and Windows PC.

The Alpha Skip-Ahead ring provides the earliest access to new features but may also include bugs or incomplete implementations. A broader public rollout across all Xbox accounts is expected to follow the Insider phase, though no specific date for the general release has been confirmed.

What's the Difference With Xbox's Achievements System?

The standard Xbox achievement system, built around Gamerscore, has been in place since the Xbox 360 launched in 2005. It assigns a numerical point value to each achievement in a game, which accumulates into a total Gamerscore displayed on a player's profile. Completing all achievements in a game currently produces no special recognition beyond the individual achievement notifications themselves.

Mythic Achievements change that by adding a dedicated milestone reward that sits above the standard achievement list, functioning as a visible, permanent marker of full game completion.

The core Gamerscore system remains unchanged, meaning existing achievement values and totals are unaffected. Mythic Achievements run alongside Gamerscore as a separate layer, giving completionists a new goal to pursue without replacing or modifying the existing framework that has been in place for over two decades.
