WTA eyes ‘Super Bowl of women’s sports’ as Tour Finals moved to new US venue

  • The season-ending WTA Finals will be staged in Charlotte, North Carolina, for at least three years starting in 2027, with the WTA also relocating its headquarters to the city from St Petersburg, Florida.
  • The 2026 edition of the tournament will take place in Indian Wells, California, following the premature end of a deal with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which hosted the previous event in Riyadh.
  • WTA chair Valerie Camillo said the organisation wants to turn the event into “the Super Bowl of women’s sports” and stated that the governing body will directly operate the Charlotte event through a public-private partnership to gain financial control and secure long-term stability.
  • The strategic shift comes amid financial difficulties for the tour, with reports indicating projected operating losses of $23m in 2026 following the loss of Saudi revenue.
  • Prize money for the 2026 Finals will stand at $10m (£7.4m), marking a $5.5m (£4.1m) decrease from 2025, with organisers exploring future profit-sharing models with players.
