Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has responded to John Henry's calls for spending restrictions, insisting it would hinder hopes of continuing to progress at a steady rate.
The Magpies' investment received from their Saudi-backed owners has seen the club go from battling relegation to challenging for the Champions League in the space of one season, aided by the arrivals of stars such as Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope.
Liverpool face a battle on their hands to continue competing with clubs such as Chelsea, Newcastle and both Manchester clubs, each of whom have greater resources in the transfer market and have spent heavily to bolster their respective squads in recent times.

The Reds have taken a more cautious approach regarding the acquisition of players under the stewardship of FSG. Manager Jurgen Klopp has repeatedly stated Liverpool will only recruit the 'right' individuals whose profile matches the culture of the club. FSG have had their fair share of critics for a perceived lack of ambition to match the signings being made by others, though this has not prevented Klopp's side from challenging for trophies.
During an exclusive interview with the ECHO this week, FSG chief Henry admitted expenditure caps could be necessary to prevent the Premier League becoming a division whereby "one or two clubs have little competition." Asked to offer his view on these comments, Howe told reporters: "I wouldn’t want to see any more restrictions on spending.
"We have spent money – don’t get me wrong – but future restrictions would certainly deny our ability to improve as quickly as we want to.”
