If you have been on social media at all the past week, then you probably know that San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk has officially requested a trade. The standout receiver is entering the final year of his rookie contract and needs a new deal, but the 49ers have yet to offer him a reasonable deal.
So, of course, this has led to wild speculation about where he might play in 2024. One of the latest rumors is that the Raiders could swap Davante Adams for Aiyuk, given his Arizona State connection with Antonio Pierce. But that doesn’t make sense for a variety of reasons.
In a recent article by Vic Tafur of The Athletic, he explained why the Raiders aren’t interested in any such move:
Social media gave us a hot Aiyuk for Davante Adams rumor this week (thanks internet!), but that doesn’t make much sense for the Raiders. Both receivers will need a new contract soon (Aiyuk is unhappy while Adams is due to make $36 million in salary in 2025) and Adams is the better player.
The Raiders are also very high on their No. 2 receiver, Jakobi Meyers, and drafted tight end/Swiss Army knife Brock Bowers.
The Raiders are pretty set at the pass catcher and it doesn’t make sense to move Adams at this point. The Raiders have other spots to upgrade and receiver isn’t one of them. While this is a fun rumor, expect the Raiders to pass on the opportunity to trade for Aiyuk right now.
