AHMEDABAD: Afghanistan were sniffing at the doorstep of the semifinals of ICC World Cup 2023 when they had Australia reeling at 91-7 in pursuit of 292, in Mumbai on Tuesday. However, two hours of stupendous batting by Glenn Maxwell blew them away. The loss against the five-time World champions left them with an improbable mathematical equation of beating South Africa by 438 runs in their final round-robin clash to overtake New Zealand and clinch the final last-four spot.
Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott says he would have taken four victories at the beginning of their campaign but rues missed opportunities in certain matches.
