When were the Women's Euros established?

The Women's Euros were officially established in 1982 with the first tournament taking place two years later in six stadiums across the continent. It was originally called the European Competition for Women's Football and Sweden were the inaugural winners, beating England on penalties at Luton Town's Kenilworth Road after a two-legged final.

The next tournament was held in Norway in 1987 and the hosts were victorious, beating defending champions Sweden 2-1 in the final. After that, Germany dominated the competition. They won eight of the next nine editions - including a 6-2 win against England in 2009's final - in a run that lasted until 2013.

The only other team to win the Women's Euros during this time were Norway, who defeated hosts Italy 1-0 in 1993. Germany were finally knocked off their perch five years ago when hosts Netherlands defeated Denmark 4-2 to win their inaugural crown.

German icons Inka Grings and Brigit Prinz are the leading scorers in the competition's history - finding the back of the net 10 times each. Italy's Carolina Morace, Germany's Heidi Mohr and Sweden's Lotta Schelin have all scored eight goals at the Women's Euros.

Which countries have previously won Women's Euro 2022?

Germany are undoubtedly the most successful team in the competition's history, winning all eight of the finals they've appeared in. The only other nations to have won the Women's Euros are Norway (twice), Sweden (once) and Netherlands (once).

England and Italy have both appeared in two finals, while Denmark have also made the showpiece event. Austria, Finland and Spain have all previously reached the semi-finals.
