The summer holidays have a darker side for Yolandi Vermaak.
At this time of year, the Canberra woman is called out about twice as often as usual to help animals that are injured or dying on the roadside.
Ms Vermaak established Wombat Rescue four years ago with a straightforward goal: to save animals struck by cars on rural roads in nearby New South Wales.
