A woman was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a tram on Thursday afternoon (October 6). Emergency services raced to the scene shortly after 12.30pm, with Airport and East Didsbury line Metrolink services cancelled.
The woman, aged in her early 20s, had been hit by the tram at a crossing beside the stop on St Werburgh's Road, near Chorlton. Paramedics and a rapid response vehicle attended and she was quickly taken to hospital.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed to the M.E.N they received a report of a woman having suffered a head injury after being hit by a tram. She was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary with life-threatening injuries.
After the collision, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) announced that services on the East Didsbury Line had been cancelled, with the Airport line also partly suspended. The disruption continued for hours into Thursday evening.
The North West Ambulance Service confirmed they attended and took the injured woman to Manchester Royal Infirmary. Police also remained at the scene conducting enquiries with a cordon in place at the station.
A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 12:34 to an incident involving a tram and a woman. We have sent various resources, including a rapid response car. We took the patient to hospital with a serious head injury."
On Thursday evening, a TfGM Spokesperson added: “At around 12:35pm we received reports of a collision involving a tram and woman on a crossing approaching the St Werburgh’s Road Metrolink stop. The woman has since been taken to hospital and her condition is unknown.
“Currently no trams are operating between Trafford Bar and St Werburgh’s Road, and all services on the East Didsbury line have been suspended. Services will operate Manchester Airport to Northern Moor and Rochdale to Trafford Bar. Customers are urged to check the TfGM website for more information on service disruption.”
