A woman in her 40s has been arrested as Gardai continue to investigate a fatal car fire which killed two children in Westmeath.
Thelma Dennany, five, and her two-year-old brother Michael both passed away from their injuries, sustained in the fire at Lacken near Multyfarnham in Co Westmeath earlier this month.
Gardai have been probing the incident since it happened and today confirmed that an arrest had been made.
A spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: "Gardaí investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 2 year old infant and 5 year old girl in a fatal car fire at Lacken, Multyfarnham, County Westmeath on Friday, 9th September, 2022, have arrested a female in her 40s.
"She is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the midlands.
"An Garda Síochána will be making no further comment at this time."
The pair were buried last week in an emotional service.
The children's heartbroken father Michael, sister Katelyn and brother Eddie were comforted by relatives throughout the ceremony, with hundreds in attendance.
In a family statement read out at the funeral on behalf of the family, it said: "We the family would like to thank everyone in helping us say farewell to Thelma and Mikey.
"We use farewell because with the memories they've left us in their short lives and their infectious smiles, they will be with us forever.
"Your heartfelt sympathy and offers of help have touched us greatly at this very difficult time. Once again we thank you all."
