A woman has died after a fatal collision involving three cars and a small truck on the Princes Freeway at Darnum, east of Melbourne.

Police say the collision occurred on the freeway at the Bona Vista Road exit about 8:40am.

The woman, who was the passenger of a Jeep four-wheel drive and was yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The 32-year-old female driver of the Jeep was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A teenage girl, who was travelling in the back seat, was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Two men in a second car were assessed at the scene by paramedics.

The female driver of a third vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating at the scene.

Police say the truck driver is assisting with their inquiries.

Traffic slowed at time of crash

Major Collision Unit Detective Sergeant Daryll Out said at the time of the incident the right-hand lane of the freeway was closed.

"There was a bit of a bank-up of traffic that was caused as a result of the cars merging into one lane," he said.

"Up ahead there was a tractor mowing the grass on the right-hand side to traffic. [There was a] vehicle with a sign telling everyone to merge into the left-hand lane."

He said traffic in the left-hand had either stopped or was moving slowly.

Police believed the truck, which was carrying a skip bin, collided with the Jeep.

The provisional road toll following the Darnum fatal collision stands at 132.
