A woman has been left with potentially life-changing injuries after her bike collided with a lorry in Westminster.
Police and paramedics were scrambled to Parliament Square, near the junction with Bridge Street, around 11.30am on Wednesday.
Video footage from the scene shows London’s Air Ambulance landing near Parliament, which was sealed off amid a huge emergency response.
Shocked MPs attempting to enter or leave the House of Commons were instructed not to use the main security gates, said a witness.
They also saw the woman’s bike mangled on the ground.
The Metropolitan Police said she was taken to hospital where her condition is not being treated as life-threatening but may potentially be life-changing.
Officers have launched an investigation.
The lorry driver – who stopped at the scene – has not been arrested.
A police spokesman added: “At around 11.30pm today, Wednesday, September 4, a lorry was involved in a collision with a cyclist in Parliament Square, near the junction with Bridge Street.
“London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance paramedics attended.
“The cyclist, a female, was taken to hospital. Her condition is not being treated as life-threatening but may potentially be life-changing.
“The driver of the lorry stopped. There have been no arrests.
“The circumstances will be investigated.”
London Ambulance Service added: “We were called at 11.34am today (September 4) to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of Bridge Street and Parliament Street, Westminster.
“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer.
“We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance. We treated a woman at the scene and took her to a major trauma centre as a priority.”
