A woman in Italy realized she had made a disastrous mistake after throwing away a winning lottery ticket worth $1.16 million. By the time she had gotten back to the store where she had thrown it the trash had already been taken but the woman and her family weren’t prepared to give up, not with that kind of life-changing money on the line.
The woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, was apparently led to believe that the ticket was worthless after a self-service lottery terminal displayed a message telling her that the ticket was “not payable,” according to an article from People. The woman subsequently threw the ticket away only to later be informed by a family member that she had made a big mistake. The ticket was actually a winner.
