Wishaw fly-tipping becoming a real issue according to community council

Fly tipping in Wishaw is getting out of control, according to a community councillor.

Alan Love, a member of Central Wishaw community council, has said that the town is "becoming a dump".

There has been an issue with fly tipping in the town for around five years and Alan says that even though there have been improvements there is still much to be done.

He told Lanarkshire Live: "There is a big difference to how it was five years ago but there is still a real issue of fly tipping in Wishaw.

"One of the main areas of concern is at Belhaven Terrace, which is a complete dump.

"There is rubbish and waste just yards from the Main Street and it is horrible.

"The local authority does not appear to have the resources to address the issue while there is no deterrent in place to stop those responsible for making our town centre a dumping ground.

"What kind of image does this present to people as they go through Wishaw? Or to new business owners?

"More needs to be done to try and deter people from dumping here."

Wishaw Councillor Bob Burgess has worked hard over the last five years to try and solve the fly tipping crisis.

The Conservative councillor has said there is not much that can be done, due to laws that prevent the council from forcing landlords to make tenants dispose of waste.

He said: "One of the main issues we have at Belhaven Terrace is that the majority of the land where people dump waste is private.

"There is no way for the council to fine people from dumping here as there is nothing they can do.

"Just the other week I was out with the waste management team and in one alleyway we found 20 bags of rubbish left there from the flats.

"The shop owners are all sick of it and we are trying to work with them for some sort of group agreement to pay for the area to be maintained.

"The next step I would like to see would be for laws to come in place to allow the council to force landlords to do something about this.

"There is currently very little they can do, so we need to work and get these laws in place so that we can clean up our town."
