William Saliba and Arsenal stars could get new shirt numbers if £134m double transfer is sealed

Shirt number changes have been a regular occurrence at Arsenal in recent years and this trend can continue ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Whether it's been Bukayo Saka going from No.77 to No.7, Thomas Partey switching from No.18 to his favoured No.5, Emile Smith Rowe been handed the No.10 shirt - previously worn by the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Mesut Ozil - or Gabriel Martinelli upgrading to No.11 from No.35, the Gunners don't hesitate when it comes to making alterations.

Furthermore, it took until after Bernd Leno completed a transfer to London rivals Fulham last summer for Aaron Ramsdale to be confirmed as the club's new number one and similar scenarios could occur in the coming months with senior players expected to permanently depart to make room for new arrivals.

Whilst any new signing at the Emirates Stadium will be allocated a squad number, certain departures could allow those who are staying to make an alteration and below are the Arsenal players who could follow in the footsteps of Saka and company by changing shirt numbers for the 2023/24 season.

William Saliba

When the Frenchman reported for pre-season training last summer, he seemingly confirmed that he would be wearing the No.2 shirt for the 2022/23 campaign. However, this particular squad number technically was not available before Arsenal faced Crystal Palace in the Premier League opener on August 5.

Significantly for William Saliba, the Arsenal No.2 shirt became vacant on transfer deadline day last summer when Hector Bellerin sealed a permanent move to Barcelona and it remains up for grabs to this very day. Therefore, it could be that the change is made official once his new contract is signed.

Having said that, if Arsenal complete a £40million deal for Jurrien Timber and the No.2 shirt number is still vacant upon arrival in N5 then a battle could ensue to claim it as this has been the Dutchman's preferred option at Ajax for the last three seasons and for his national team.

Jorginho

A double-digit shirt number has looked rather strange on Jorginho's back ever since he completed a £12m move to Arsenal in the January transfer window. Mainly because he wore No.5 throughout his spell with Chelsea after being Napoli's No.8 for five straight seasons.

Even for the Italy national team, he's usually seen wearing No.8. Of course, that squad number won't be available in north London anytime soon with captain Martin Odegaard currently in possession of it, but No.5 could be up for grabs as Partey is being linked with an exit this summer with clubs in Saudi Arabia said to be willing to pay £34million for his services.

Mauro Bandeira

Despite not being classed as an Arsenal senior player, Mauro Bandeira's shirt number could be one to keep an eye on as he might be asked to move over to a new one if the club manage to seal a transfer worth £100m for Declan Rice.

The England international has worn No.41 at West Ham United ever since breaking into the first-team and has gone on record stating he would like to continue the tradition even if he was to leave the London Stadium: "To be honest with you, I've been having this conversation with my Dad, regardless of what happens in my career, I think I might stay with the 41," he told Gary Neville on The Overlap.

"I don't know, I just think Rice 41 has a nice ring to it, obviously I've grown up playing in it. I'm a bit superstitious with things like that, I don't know if I change to a new number it would hamper my performances, I don't know I just think sometimes about a couple things like that."
