William DeTemple's Journey from Vancouver Grit to Guiding Founders Through the 9 Figure Company Growth Framework

William C. DeTemple's path into business leadership began long before boardrooms, strategic frameworks, or growth advisory work entered the picture. Childhood routines evolved into entrepreneurship, leading to the creation of 9 Figure Company, an organization that helps founders develop the systems and structures that support meaningful business expansion.

His early environment cultivated a deep familiarity with responsibility. As a child growing up in Vancouver, DeTemple often traveled alone across the city to attend school, navigating multiple bus transfers at an age when most children rarely ventured far from home. When his family purchased a ranch in the Fraser Valley, mornings began well before sunrise. Farm animals required attention long before school hours began. "Discipline becomes part of your thinking when your days begin early, and responsibility comes with it," DeTemple says. "You learn that progress usually follows consistent effort."

Those lessons found an early outlet when DeTemple took on a newspaper route at the age of 11. "The job started small, with only a handful of customers. As I noticed how each new subscriber added a little more to my earnings, I began reaching out to neighbors who weren't getting the paper yet. Little by little, the route grew," he states. During one particularly heavy winter storm, when snow made bicycle travel difficult, he completed deliveries on horseback across rural roads. The experience carried a sense of persistence that stayed with him well beyond childhood.

Small ventures such as that paper route offered a glimpse into a pattern that would continue through adulthood. DeTemple developed an early habit of examining situations carefully, identifying opportunities for improvement, and taking practical steps toward expansion. That pattern followed him into his early career years.

Following his formal education, DeTemple briefly worked in a unionized environment while pursuing additional training in the evenings. The structure of the workplace eventually prompted reflection about how advancement typically occurred within that system. The experience encouraged him to pursue a more entrepreneurial direction, and soon afterward, he began exploring opportunities to start a business of his own.

His first major venture emerged in the 1970s through an import business that sourced toys from manufacturers around the world and supplied them to retail stores along the Pacific coast to eventually expand nationally. Building the operation required a mix of persistence and resourcefulness. International communication took place through handwritten letters, product samples arrived by mail, and distribution involved driving long distances between cities to introduce the products directly to store owners.

DeTemple says, "I had to think creatively about how to finance the operation. Setting up back-to-back letters of credit helped everyone involved feel comfortable with the transaction, and it gave us a structure that supported the growth we were aiming for. It also showed me how important access to capital can be when a business is trying to move forward."

Over the following years, DeTemple continued participating in the creation and expansion of several businesses across different industries along the Pacific coast of the United States. Those ventures eventually transitioned through ownership changes over time, offering him the opportunity to reflect on both the opportunities and structural challenges that accompany growth. After decades spent in operational leadership, he relocated to Florida with his wife during a transitional period that followed one of those business chapters.

The move prompted a period of reflection about how his experience might contribute to the broader entrepreneurial community. "I had a conversation with a longtime colleague who gave me the idea to offer what I've learned to founders who are working through similar growth challenges," DeTemple says.

That conversation eventually led to the creation of 9 Figure Company. The organization focuses on working with founders and executive teams whose companies generate several million dollars in annual revenue and aspire to expand further. DeTemple engages with leadership teams to examine operational structures, financial models, and management systems that influence growth trajectories.

The firm's philosophy centers on the idea that a nine-figure revenue milestone represents a structural stage in a company's evolution. Within this methodology, growth unfolds through a series of stages. A company might move from several million dollars in revenue toward larger thresholds over time, adapting leadership structures and operational systems at each level.

To guide that process, DeTemple developed a framework consisting of eight internal and four external practices. The internal practices address elements such as leadership alignment, operational efficiency, marketing systems, financial clarity, and team development. The external practices involve areas including capital access, strategic partnerships, acquisitions, and broader market positioning.

DeTemple notes that organizations entering the program typically undergo a comprehensive evaluation that explores how these practices are functioning inside the business. The aim involves identifying areas where additional structure may support further growth. Throughout this process, DeTemple emphasizes the importance of examining organizational foundations before pursuing outward expansion. "Building a company resembles building a house," he explains. "You begin with the plumbing and the infrastructure that sits beneath the foundation. Once those systems function properly, everything built above them has a far greater chance of working well."

For William DeTemple, the broader motivation behind his work at 9 Figure Company extends beyond financial milestones. Throughout his career, he has remained deeply interested in the role businesses play in creating stable employment opportunities. "I'm passionate about helping entrepreneurs grow their companies and watching the opportunities that growth creates," he says. "If a company expands thoughtfully, it can create meaningful work for many people."
