Why was Derry's Shipquay Street, the Diamond and Lisanagelvin closed today?

Derry city centre came to a standstill momentarily on Wednesday (June 15).

Police in the city were tasked to Shipquay Street, the Diamond and Lisnagelvin after a report had been made that three devices had been left at the three separate locations.

However, following a number of enquiries and searches in the areas, police said that nothing untoward was found.

In a statement, Inspector Tim McCullough said: "However, we would urge the public to be vigilant. If you notice anything which looks out of place or suspicious, do not approach or touch it but contact us immediately on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

"Our primary aim is to keep the local community safe and we would like to thank the community for their understanding during the course of our public safety operation this afternoon."

Meanwhile, police in Derry are also investigating after a woman aged in her 40s was beaten by a gang of masked men armed with hammers in a "terrifying ordeal" in her own flat.

Police said the alleged aggravated burglary occurred inside a flat in the Fountain Hill area of Derry just before 10.15pm on Tuesday night, June 14.

It's understood that the attack involved six men but only four of the masked men forced entry to the property, while the two other men remained outside during the incident.
