Why there's no deadline day transfer to Napoli for Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo

Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli has already explained why the Serie A club will not be making a last-gasp move for Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speculation had been circling that Napoli and AC Milan could make late bids to bring in the forward. In the former's case, it was understood that any deal was only going to be sanctioned if Victor Osimhen was to leave the club.

Any deal which was possibly there for Ronaldo appears to now be dead in the water as the deadline nears, especially considering Giuntoli's comments on Wednesday. Speaking on DAZN, the director said: "We have a very good rapport with his agent Jorge Mendes.

"But there was never anything concrete between Napoli and Cristiano Ronaldo." These comments appear to confirm that Napoli will not be signing the 37-year-old and it is now unlikely any other team will do so this window.

It is a dramatic shift in events considering where United and Ronaldo's relationship was at the beginning of pre-season. Back then, the Portuguese ace told the Reds that he wished to leave Old Trafford should a 'reasonable offer' be submitted.

Ronaldo would go on to miss the tour of Thailand and Australia but he would return to training at the end of July. He has since only started one Premier League game - the defeat to Brentford - and has had to settle for bench cameos in the other fixtures this campaign.
