Why the Vedas Have a Brahmana and Aranyaka Layer, and Who Each One Was For

A Text Built Like a Life

The Vedas were never meant to be read from beginning to end by a single kind of person. They were composed across centuries as a layered structure, each layer addressing a different relationship between the individual and the sacred. The Samhitas at the base are the hymns themselves, the raw material of worship. Above them sit the Brahmanas, then the Aranyakas, and finally the Upanishads. The sequence is not chronological in the way a biography is. It follows a life.
