- Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at a military base medical facility on November 5, 2009, killing 13 people and wounding more than 30.
- Hasan carried out the attack using a laser-sighted pistol after shouting "Allahu akbar” — Arabic for "God is great!" while soldiers underwent health checks.
- The shooting came weeks before Hasan, now 56, was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan . Prosecutors said he was motivated by unwillingness to be sent to Afghanistan and the shooting was in retaliation for America’s wars in the Muslim world.
- Attempting to stop soldiers from deploying to Afghanistan to kill fellow Muslims, he mounted virtually no defense at trial. He told jurors the evidence would confirm he was the gunman, calling himself a soldier who had "switched sides."
- Hasan was left partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair from being shot by police upon his arrest. In 2013, a military jury convicted Hasan of 45 counts of murder and sentenced him to death.
