Disneyland has spent decades selling the fantasy of escaping ordinary life for a day. One man took the idea of staying longer much too far. Stories about people hiding inside the park after closing have fueled a particular kind of Disney legend: empty streets, forbidden corners, and the possibility of having the entire Magic Kingdom to yourself.
But the historical record tells a more sobering story. In June 1973, 18-year-old Bogden Delaurot and his 10-year-old brother, Dorian, hid on Tom Sawyer Island after Disneyland closed. Their attempt to remain inside the park ended in tragedy, not a secret overnight adventure. Bogden drowned while trying to swim back across the Rivers of America, and rescuers later recovered his younger brother.
