Why Parts of India Mourn Ravana on the Same Day the Rest Burns Him

The Effigy and the Shrine

In Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, there is a temple to Ravana that stays shut for most of the year. On Dussehra it opens, and the community that tends it performs last rites, not puja. They mourn him as a fallen scholar, a Brahmin who made a catastrophic choice, not as a demon whose destruction deserves fireworks. A few hundred kilometres away in Jodhpur, the Meghwal community has observed a similar mourning tradition for generations, holding Ravana as a figure of ancestral reverence. In Andhra Pradesh, communities with lineage claims to Lanka's royal court mark the day with rituals of grief. The effigy burns in the same country where the shrine opens.
