Why Harry Maguire is missing for Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest in Carabao Cup semi-final

Captain Harry Maguire will miss Manchester United's Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Wednesday evening through suspension.

The centre-back, who has made just 15 appearances in all competitions so far this season, missed out on a place in the squad because of being forced to serve a one-match suspension. The England international was booked in the quarter-final win over Charlton Athletic earlier this month, marking his second caution of United's Carabao Cup campaign.

Maguire played no part in the 2-0 win over Burnley in round four, meaning he was not booked in successive matches, with his first booking coming in the 4-2 win over Aston Villa in round three. Nevertheless, two cautions ahead of the semi-final stage do result in a suspension.

Carabao Cup rules state that all yellow cards ahead of the semi-finals are wiped, meaning no United player will be suspended for the second-leg against Forest at Old Trafford next Wednesday evening, in the event of them picking up a yellow card in the first-leg meeting. Maguire, therefore, will serve his suspension for the trip to the City Ground, given his two cautions were collected ahead of the conclusion of the quarter-finals.

He was yellow-carded with just ten minutes of normal time left during the 3-0 win over Charlton earlier this month, at which point United were only leading 1-0. Had he not have collected that caution, the former Leicester City man would have been in contention to start against Steve Cooper's side on the banks of the Trent, with Raphael Varane having made way in the starting line-up for Victor Lindelof, who is set to start in the heart of the defence alongside Lisandro Martinez.
