Why Didn't They Ask Evans? New trailer released for Hugh Laurie series filmed in Gower as release date confirmed

An eerie new trailer for the upcoming three-part series Why Didn't They Ask Evans? directed by Hugh Laurie and partially filmed in Gower has been shared as streaming service BritBox confirms the series' release date.

The mini-series, adapted from the novel of the same name by Agatha Christie, is expected to be one of BritBox's most successful and most-streamed original series, and features a star-studded cast including Will Poulter, Jim Broadbent, Nia Trussler Jones, Richard Dixon and Lucy Boynton.

Director Hugh Laurie also appears in the series, which drew widespread attention locally last summer when eagle-eyed locals spotted film crews on Three Cliffs Bay and saw Laurie and Poulter enjoying a bite to eat at a popular Spanish restaurant in Swansea marina. The novel, first published in 1934, tells the story of Bobby Jones and socialite friend Lady Frances Derwent who discover the body of a man while playing golf, and who take it upon themselves to find the killer. The IMDB page for the mini-series summarises the plot as: "A dying man's enigmatic last words send vicar's son, Bobby Jones, and his socialite friend, Lady Frankie Derwent, on a crime-solving adventure."

Back in April 2021, Laurie told Hollywood-based TV news site Deadline that he had fallen "deeper and deeper in love with the characters" while filming the series. "The hairs on the back of my neck haven’t properly settled down from the first time I grasped the beauty of the essential mystery," he said. "Since then, I have fallen deeper and deeper in love with the characters, and feel immensely honoured to have been given the chance to retell their story in this form. I will wear a tie on set, and give it everything I have."

The new trailer shows Bobby (played by Poulter) and a relative peering over a cliff to a body on the beach below. As waves crash, he scurries down the cliffpath, almost losing his footing, before reaching the body and calling up to his relative: "He's alive," before his relative leaves to get help for the injured man.

Seconds later, Bobby tells the man "they're coming, help is coming" - only for the anonymous man to grab his arm and say softly: "Why didn't they ask Evans?" before passing away.

Bobby and the man then fade out and are replaced by a black screen with the logo for the series and "streaming 14th April," confirming the series' release date is just weeks away.

It's understood these scenes were all filmed on-location at Three Cliffs Bay in Gower. For more stories about Gower, go here.

Why Didn't They Ask Evans? is set to be released on BritBox on April 14, 2022.
