Why Chris Wood won't be able to haunt Newcastle United on Friday night

Newcastle United won't be haunted by a familiar face on Friday night against Nottingham Forest.

Striker Chris Wood, who left the Magpies in January, is ineligible because he is technically still on loan from Newcastle. That loan will turn into a permanent deal at the end of the season.

But Wood would have been sidelined anyway due to an injury suffered in Forest's 3-1 loss at Spurs at the weekend. Forest boss Steve Cooper said today: "Chris would not have been able to play through injury (thigh). He walked off against Spurs.

"At the same time he would be ineligible to play due to registration with the loan."

However, former Toon midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is free to player and ready to face his old team-mates, as is ex-Newcastle player Jack Colback, Cooper said: "There's some obvious side shows with ex-players.

"With Jonjo and Jack Colback can but I think them guys don't play it down, they are now focused on Forest and what it takes to do well."
