Why Chelsea's Raheem Sterling went straight down the tunnel after England substitution vs USA

Chelsea's Raheem Sterling was substituted in the 68th minute by Gareth Southgate as England drew 0-0 against the USA.

The Three Lions struggled to replicate their dazzling World Cup opening performance against Iran as they took a point from the game against the U.S. Men's National Team. Sterling scored and grabbed an assist in the 6-2 win against Iran but failed to add to his tally in last night's Group B fixture.

The 27-year-old was signed by the Blues in the summer transfer window after completing a £47million move from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City. Chelsea fans feared the worst as Sterling headed straight down the tunnel after being replaced by former City teammate Jack Grealish in the second half.

Three Lions' boss Gareth Southgate has explained why the Chelsea star did not take a seat on the substitutes bench after being taken off against the United States. Speaking to the media after England's poor display, Southgate cleared up rumours regarding Sterling's exit down the tunnel.

The England manager explained: "With Raheem, he is one of the players in dope testing. So I think he started refuelling straight away on his recovery.

"I think he went to the bench first anyway and then went in."

Sterling has notched 81 caps for England, scoring 20 goals, and has been a key player under Southgate. Fans will be relieved to hear that the 27-year-old has not suffered an injury and will be available for their final Group B fixture against Wales as they aim to secure qualification for the World Cup round of 16 stage as group winners.
