Why Chelsea's Club World Cup final is being televised in the UK as landmark rule bypassed

The 3pm blackout rule will not apply to the Club World Cup final that Chelsea are likely to feature in.

The match is due to be broadcast on Channel 4 after the television station secured rights to the competition.

In the United Kingdom, no live football can be televised that clashes with the 3 pm kick-offs on a Saturday afternoon to protect match-going attendances in the lower leagues.

Chelsea must win a one-legged semi-final against a yet-to-be-determined opponent on February 9 to secure their place in the Club World Cup final on Saturday, February 12.

Given Europe's domination of the competition, having won all but three of the competitions since it was relaunched in 2005 and represented in every single final, it would be a major shock if Chelsea did not feature.

The official rule states that no matches can be televised between 2.45 pm and 5.15 pm. The final is due to kick off at 4.30 pm, with Channel 4's coverage starting half an hour earlier.

Normally, this would mean the competition cannot be televised in the UK, however, as this is a FIFA-governed competition, not a UEFA, FA, EFL or Premier League-governed competition, matches are exempt from the normal blackout rule.

Chelsea's semi-final will kick off at 4.30pm on February 9 and will be shown on E4, as will the third/fourth-place play-off, kicking off at 12.45 pm on the same day as the final.

Channel 4 head of sport Pete Andrews said: "This is one of the few major honours to have eluded Chelsea so it'd be great if they can make history live on Channel 4.

"We're delighted to be bringing top-flight football live on free to air terrestrial television, let's just hope the Blues can go all the way."

The tournament features the continental champions of each continent, with the European and South American winners - Chelsea and Palmeiras - advanced straight through to the quarter-finals.

Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia, Egypt's Al Ahly, Mexico's Monterrey and AS Pirae of Tahiti represent the four remaining continents: Asia; Africa; North and Central America; and Oceania, respectively.

As hosts, Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates complete the draw.

Chelsea's only appearance in the Club World Cup previously came in 2012, when they lost to Corinthians of Brazil 1-0 in the final.
