Why Caregiving Can Leave Families With Two Crises Instead of One

Why Caregiving Can Leave Families With Two Crises Instead of One
A family caregiving plan needs to account for more than medical bills. Lost wages, reduced retirement savings, transportation, and ongoing household expenses can create a second financial crisis for the person providing care – Shutterstock

A family can solve a medical emergency and still end up with a financial emergency of its own. That is one of the cruelest surprises of caregiving: helping a parent, spouse, or relative stay safe can put the caregiver’s own future at risk. A hospital discharge, a fall, or a new diagnosis can suddenly turn an ordinary household budget into a complicated exercise in survival.

The first crisis belongs to the person who needs help. The second often grows quietly in the background as relatives rearrange work schedules, pay for supplies, drive across town, and postpone their own plans. Nobody sends a separate bill labeled Future Financial Trouble. Instead, the costs arrive in small, reasonable-looking pieces until the family’s options begin to shrink.
