Why 'cancel Netflix' is trending as streaming service accidentally posts password guidelines

Searches for 'cancel Netflix account' are soaring, as many people take to Google in a bid to figure out how to put a stop to their subscription, according to new data.

The search spike comes as new Netflix rules that would ultimately make it harder to share accounts and passwords with friend and family were released. However, Netflix have now explained that the crackdown will not be enforced after password guidelines were shared accidentally.

The findings by comparison site JohnSlots, revealed that online interest in the term 'cancel Netflix account’ skyrocketed since the accidental announcement, with an unprecedented spike in people wanting to delete their Netflix accounts. Searches soared by as much as 733 per cent on February 2 after people took to social media to share their thoughts.

Netflix new rules to stop password sharing posted accidentally

According to the Guardian, Netflix mistakenly published a set of guidelines for cracking down on password sharing to global users.

The streaming giant said the guidelines, which are being trialled in Chile, Peru and Costa Rica, had been posted accidentally across its help centre pages on Wednesday. These have since been taken down..

As reported in The Guardian, Netflix said: “For a brief time yesterday, a help center [sic] article containing information that is only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru went live in other countries. We have since updated it.”

The rules being tested in Central and South America, according to ITV, required users to watch something on the Netflix app or website at least once every 31 days as well as rules surrounding WIFI.

However as of now, it is important to note no changes have been announced for the UK.
