Walk into a dealership, and you'll see AWD and 4WD listed as if they're two completely different things. Technically, both systems can send engine power to all four wheels, so it's easy to assume they're basically interchangeable. Well, they're not.
The biggest difference is not the number of wheels receiving power. It's how the drivetrain delivers that power and how the system is designed to be used.
