Why a popular Costwolds town has enforced restrictions on tourist coaches

  • Oxfordshire County Council has approved a 12-metre length restriction for coaches on a road in a popular Costwolds town.
  • The road safety measures, which have been put in place for Priory Lane in Burford, follow several minor accidents outside the town's primary school on the narrow medieval street.
  • Existing School Keep Clear markings will be formalised alongside a weekday No Stopping restriction between 8am and 5pm.
  • Burford Town Council emphasised that the safety of school children must take priority over the convenience of tour operators.
  • Exemptions will be available for permit holders should the primary school require a coach larger than 12 metres.
