Whoopi Goldberg had a characteristically honest answer when asked what she likes most about working on The View.
Appearing on actor Keke Palmer’s podcast on Tuesday, the longtime moderator quipped that her favorite part of co-hosting ABC’s daytime talk show was “the check.”
“I love the check,” Goldberg, 70, joked.
Palmer responded, “I can only imagine what that check is.”
“Trust me, you can’t,” Goldberg quipped. “You would be shocked. Listen, you would be shocked... As soon as they’d show you that check, you’d be like, ‘What the...?’”
The EGOT winner has served as the Hot Topics moderator on the show since 2007, holding the record for the most consecutive seasons as the program’s host — even surpassing its creator, Barbara Walters.
Although she did not share the exact amount she makes on the show, Goldberg is reportedly the highest-paid panelist among her co-hosts Ana Navarro, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin, according to a recent report by Page Six Hollywood. The outlet reported that Goldberg earns between $6 and $8 million per year.
As Palmer congratulated Goldberg on such a big payout, the Sister Act star responded, “It is what it is.”
She went on to say that she is grateful for the financial and career stability that working on the show has brought her.
“I look around every day before I leave my house and I see my family and I see pictures of folks and I think, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s good to have a job.’ And I come to work,” Goldberg said. “A lot of people don’t have jobs right now, so I’m lucky. I like to talk. I like talking about stuff. I like people. And I’m okay with what I think I believe, and I don’t mind doing that.”
In November 2024, Goldberg spoke on The View about needing to work to afford to live and provide for her only daughter, 52-year-old Alexandrea Martin, who has given her three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
“I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me, too. I work for a living,” Goldberg said at the time. “If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, okay? So, I’m a working person, you know?”
She added, “My kid has to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family. I know it’s hard out there.”
