Argentina won the 2022 World Cup after beating France 4-2 on penalties following a crazy 3-3 draw in 120 minutes. Gonzalo Montiel scored the game-winning penalty after Kingsley Coman and Aurélien Tchouaméni both failed to convert their spot kicks.
Messi converted the opening goal from 12 yards after Angel Di Maria was felled by Ousmane Dembele. Di Maria then doubled his nation's lead in the 36th minute converting Alexis Mac Allister's pass.
Kylian Mbappe then stole the limelight with two goals in two minutes to drag France level and force extra time. Messi snatched the spotlight back with a 108th-minute goal but the contest was not decided yet with Mbappe scoring a penalty with two minutes left on the clock.

Messi, Paulo Dybala and Leandro Parades all scored from 12 yards in the proceeding shoot-out before Montiel's decisive penalty crowned new world champions. Enzo Fernandez won FIFA Young Player award, given to the young player of the tournament after many starring roles in Argentina's midfield which included a tremendous display in the final. The Benfica star only made his first start in Argentina's final group game against Poland.
Meanwhile, Emiliano Martinez scooped the Golden Glove trophy, which is awarded to the tournament's best keeper, after twice helping Argentina win on penalties. The Aston Villa goalkeeper saved two spot kicks in his country's quarter-final win against the Netherlands before denying Coman in the final.
The final two awards of the Golden Boot, for the tournament's top scorer and the golden ball, for the tournament's best player seemed destined to be decided between Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi. Mbappe's hat-trick in the final saw him win the golden boot with eight goals.
However, the Argentina captain will be leaving Qatar with two trophies in his grasp after winning the Golden Ball that sees him named as the best player at the 2022 World Cup.
