Veteran actor Sowcar Janaki died in Chennai on Friday at the age of 94 following age-related ailments. Her career lasted more than seven decades and covered several phases of South Indian cinema, with performances across emotional dramas, family stories, comedy and sophisticated roles. Janaki began working in the 1950s and later became closely associated with filmmaker K Balachander's films, where she played characters drawn from middle-class life.
Her career also crossed language and genre boundaries. She played emotional characters, society women, strong-willed wives and comic roles, often moving between them without being tied to one particular image.
