With the cost of living soaring, it is as important as to save money where possible. And it means that many are looking to cut costs when it comes to Christmas dinner.

Fortunately, Which? has revealed the cheapest supermarket to buy your festive feast from - and the results may surprise you.

The research compared the price of Christmas dinner essentials from five major supermarkets. It totalled the basket costs for foods including a turkey, sprouts and even Christmas pudding.

Also in the basket were potatoes, a Knorr chicken stock pot, Ocean Spray wholeberry cranberry sauce, carrots, parsnips, red cabbage, Paxo sage and onion stuffing mix.

The supermarket that came out as the cheapest was Asda, with a 10 item Christmas dinner shop totalling £30.72.

In second place was Tesco, with a total of £32.07 and Sainsbury's followed with £35.57. A shop costing £37.21 at Morrisons was fourth, with the most expensive shop from Waitrose (£43).

It means that there is a huge £12 difference between the top and bottom of the list.

A spokesperson for Asda said: "Keeping prices low for customers while delivering great quality products is so important, so we’re really pleased that Asda has been recognised as the best value supermarket for Christmas dinner.

"We’re doing all we can to help families enjoy the festivities this year including increasing the size of our Christmas range to more than 700 products with prices to suit all customer budgets.”

Aldi and Lidl were also included in a second comparison, but Which? were only ale to compare seven items throughout all stores.

The judgement including the budget supermarkets did not include Christmas pudding, stuffing and cranberry sauce.

The smaller Christmas basket was found to be cheapest at Aldi at £22.30. Lidl was only 14p more expensive than Aldi.

Asda came third with £23.72, Tesco was fourth with £23.82, and Sainsbury's fifth at £26.07.

Morrisons then Waitrose were last, costing £29.52 and £33.25 respectively.
