In the third episode of Season 3 of Ted Lasso, Rebecca Welton — everyone’s favorite fictional football club owner — went against her better judgment and visited Tish, her eccentric mother’s psychic.
Rebecca is suspicious of the entire process, but also at a dead end in her love life after Season 2’s failed relationships. So she indulges her mother’s wishes and tries to have an open mind, but Tish’s premonitions about Rebecca’s future weren’t easy to hear.
“I can see something. It’s in your hand — an object; it’s very special. It’s a green matchbook,” Tish says to a skeptical Rebecca, followed by babbling about a “[expletive] in nining armor,” and “…thunder and lightning and you, and you’re upside down and you’re drenched, but you’re safe.”

Exasperated, Rebecca tries to leave without offending Tish — until she says something that strikes Rebecca’s most exposed emotional nerve.
“You will have a family. You’re going to be a mother.”
We’ve known since Season 1 Rebecca resented her ex-husband, Rupert, for not wanting to have children and even more when he told her he was having a child with his new girlfriend. It seems Rebecca’s reached a point in her life where she deeply wants a family, but worries that future has passed her by. Hearing the psychic assure her of something she doesn’t believe will come true was the final straw before Rebecca storms out of her office.
Here’s the whole scene:
As we’ve progressed through episodes since this visit to the psychic, which predictions have come to fruition in some way and which are still outstanding? Let’s dive in!
A green matchbook
At the soft launch for Sam’s restaurant, Ola’s, the Richmond player passes around favors for each guest to take home from the party. Shocker, it’s a green matchbook! It’s the first of Tish’s premonitions to appear, and while it gives Rebecca pause, it’s certainly the one that could be the most circumstantial.
"[expletive] in nining armor"
The matchbook was one thing, but this is the one that shook Rebecca to her core in the episode, “Signs.” Upon bumping into her former boyfriend, John Wingsnight, with his new fiancée, Rebecca is shook when the woman fumbles her words and refers to John as her, you guessed it, “[expletive] in nining armor.”
The couple plays off the odd turn of phrase, but it was enough to convince Rebecca that maybe Tish wasn’t entirely full of [expletive].
Thunder and lightning
While there hasn’t yet been any literal thunder and lightning this season, we can’t help thinking it could be a callback to Roy Kent’s love advice for Rebecca at the start of Season 2.

Upside down and drenched, but safe
Welcome to Amsterdam, folks.
In Season 3, Ep. 6, Rebecca takes a tumble into a canal after walking along a bike route, flipping over a railing and landing in the water. Thankfully, a wonderful and helpful unnamed Dutchman was there to help her. Not only did he get her out of the water, he brought her into his home, dried her clothes and gave her one of the most romantic nights of her life.
Rebecca's future family
After Rebecca begins to trust Tish’s visions in Ep. 5, she visits a fertility doctor to find out if she’s still able to have a child via pregnancy, presumably finding out at the end of the episode she cannot.
Of course, giving birth is one of many ways to become a mother. And there are two things we can’t ignore:
- The mysterious Dutchman is a divorced single father of a young daughter.
- Ted Lasso casting director Theo Park sought a young Dutch girl for a role in an “award-winning TV show” last fall at the same time when Ted Lasso was filming Season 3. While we aren’t saying this casting call is definitely tied to the show, it’s not exactly outlandish to predict that not only will Rebecca’s Dutch fling return at some point this season — his daughter might become part of the story.
