More than 1000 ongoing public servants were shed from one federal department in a single year amid a collective reduction of a number of public service roles in major policy and service delivery portfolios.
The Social Services department recorded the highest proportional decline in permanent staff across the public service, with its ongoing headcount falling from 3416 in 2025 to 2388 in 2026, a reduction of 1028 employees.
