If you’re here, you’re probably wondering why a top NFL Draft quarterback prospect like Malik Willis ended up at Liberty University, a program not exactly known for its football program.
Let’s start with what Liberty is and where it’s located: It’s a university located in Lynchburg, Virginia that was founded in 1971 by Dr. Jerry Falwell, who also founded the Thomas Road Baptist Church. Per the school’s site, “Since 1971, Liberty has had a singular vision of developing Christ-centered men and women with the values, knowledge, and skills essential for impacting the world for Christ.”
So how did Willis end up there? He ended up at Auburn for two seasons, but because he was behind Jarrett Stidham, he decided to transfer and, in an ESPN.com story, he didn’t know a lot about Liberty.
Then there was this anecdote from the story:
Willis checked his daily Bible verse app the day before his official visit to Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia, and the app displayed 2 Corinthians 3:17.
Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.
The next day, when Willis walked into Liberty’s facility, he saw the verse on the wall.
“I’m like, ‘Ain’t no way. Ain’t no way.’ I ain’t even tell nobody that,” Willis said. “I just kind of like kept it to myself. But I knew right then I was like, ‘Yep, this the place I’m supposed to go.'”
Also, he did a random act of kindness at the NFL Combine, as you might recall:
