Frankie Muniz is the child star who grew up on our screens - but nowadays he leads a very different life.
It's been more than two decades since he first rose to fame on hit series Malcolm in the Middle as the titular character.
Malcolm was the child genius who had to put up with his dysfunctional family's weird and wonderful antics, including overbearing mum Lois, hen-pecked husband Hal, dim-witted Reese and youngest sibling Dewey.
In a major change to other shows airing at that time, Frankie's character would frequently break the fourth wall and speak to us viewers.
Running for seven seasons with over 150 episodes, the American sitcom once drew in a staggering 23 million viewers, while Muniz earned an Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations.
At the height of his fame, he was considered one of the most popular child actors and "one of Hollywood's most bankable teens" in 2003.
Acting roles
During his TV career, he made guest appearances in Lizzie McGuire, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and MADtv.
He played the lead role in the Agent Cody Banks movies, played Cher's underage boyfriend in Stuck on You, starred in Big Fat Liar and voiced many cartoon characters.
He reportedly made a whopping $5 million for the Agency Cody Banks sequel, but he wasn't sure if he wanted to stay in acting.
"I still don't know if I want to be an actor," said 17-year-old Frankie in 2003. "I still don't know if that's what I want to do when I grow up.
"I always said when I got to my first million, we shouldn't be talking about money, but when I got to my first million, that I was done. I was rich.
"I'm waiting for a hundred, and then I'll be done … because that's enough."
Once Malcolm in the Middle ended in 2006, Frankie admitted he was scared at the thought of getting older and expressed a desire to take a break from traditional Hollywood films.
He said: "Growing up has never scared me until last year. I started thinking about getting older, being an adult, and it scared me. Hopefully things will work out in my career. If they don't, then it was never meant to be."
To mark this transition, he starred in R-rated teen-sex comedy Extreme Movie before making a guest appearance in CBS drama Criminal Minds.
Frankie also competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2017 with pro dancer Witney Carson, with the pair finishing in third place.
The following year he became co-host of Dancing with the Stars Juniors.
But aside from a few TV appearances, Frankie decided to make a drastic career change.
New career
Having always been a lover of motorsport, Frankie became a professional Nascar race car driver.
The actor has competed in several dozen races between 2004 and 2013.
In 2007, he competed in the entire 12-race season of the Champ Car Atlantic series, finishing in 22nd place and earning $17,000 in prize money.
The following year, he finished in 11th place for the season after he was in the top 10 for every single race.
Not only has Muniz stated that his heart is set on winning a race, he even said it would be his "greatest ever achievement" despite the successful career he's had so far.
"I don't know exactly how I'll react [to winning a race] but the way I feel right now with even the thought about it, it would rank 100% as the greatest accomplishment of ... Well okay, maybe having a wife, having my son," Muniz told TMZ Sports this week.
"But, definitely number 3! I am on cloud 9. I've been very fortunate in my life to get to do a lot of cool things but this is something that I've wanted, literally, since I was five years old."
Family
Frankie married his long-term partner Paige Price in February 2020.
The model and actress worked as a presenrer on the golf network and had minor acting roles in TV and film.
Frankie described the big day to PEOPLE : "From the moment of waking up together and jumping on the bed hyping each other up, to helping our wedding planner with setting things up at the venue, all the way to walking down the aisle with my best friend, hand-in-hand, with our closest friends and family in attendance. Everything was just so us."
He previously revealed they "don't spend a minute apart", having gone into business together by buying and running a shop, Outrageous Olive Oils & Vinegars, in Arizona.
"I think she went to get her hair done like three days ago," he said. "And that was the first time we spent more than like 20 minutes apart in only three years.
"So we just get along really well and I never get bored of her. She probably gets frustrated with me because I'm a little neurotic, but we just have fun all the time.
"So it's great to have someone that you can spend so much time with and that you want to keep spending time with. We don't get tired of each other."
Their son, Mauz Mosley Muniz, was born in March last year, with Frankie saying in a cute clip: "I love my baby so much. And I love my wife more than ever."
Memory loss truth
Devastatingly, Frankie has suffered from a number of health issues over the years.
In 2012, at the age of just 26, he was hospitalised after having a transient ischemic attack, then suffered a second one in 2013.
"Almost a year to the day, I experienced another mini stroke. Hopefully that will be the last. Miserable," he tweeted at the time.
While appearing on Dancing With The Stars in 2017, he said: "I'm not actually sure how my memory loss started. I have had nine concussions and I've had a fair amount of mini-strokes."
In an interview with the Mirror in May 2013, Frankie revealed a psychic told him that he would die aged 27.
It was widely reported that Muniz is unable to remember starring in many of his films and shows, including Malcolm in the Middle.
However, in December he claimed this isn't exactly true.
"This is the first time that I've actually ever gotten to clarify," Muniz said on Wild Ride podcast. "It's just funny because I have people write me all the time like, 'Oh, it's so sad.'"
Muniz confirmed he does remember sporadic moments from the show, just not every moment of filming.
"It's like, 'He doesn’t even know he was Malcolm,'" Muniz joked. "No, I know."
