Roughly 34.8 million Americans will find a different congressional race on their 2026 midterm ballots. They did not change addresses. Their homes, streets, and usual polling places remain exactly the same. Instead, the political map shifted around them.
A Protect Democracy analysis shows this affects about 1 in 10 people nationwide. Congressional districts typically change only after a decennial census. Mid-decade redistricting on this scale is unusual. Yet, ahead of the 2026 midterms, nine states redrew their boundaries.
