When Anil Kumble dismissed Brian Lara while bowling with a broken jaw

NEW DELHI: Cricketers often exhibit incredible resilience by playing through injuries, showing their dedication to the game and their teams. These instances highlight the toughness and fighting spirit that cricketers bring to the game, often putting their bodies on the line for their teams.

The courageous act of India spin great Anil Kumble, who turned 53 on October 17, bowling with a broken jaw is one of the most iconic moments in cricket history.

It took place during the second Test match of India's 2002 tour of the West Indies, held at Antigua. Kumble was batting when he was struck by a bouncer from Mervyn Dillon, which fractured his jaw.

Despite the injury, Kumble returned to bowl in the second innings, his face heavily bandaged.

Showing immense grit and determination, he bowled 14 consecutive overs and even managed to dismiss West Indies legend Brian Lara.

Kumble's brave act was widely praised, and though the match ended in a draw, his actions left a lasting impression as a symbol of resilience and dedication to the team.

After this heroic effort, Kumble was flown back to India for surgery. This incident exemplified his toughness and solidified his legacy as one of cricket's fiercest competitors.
